Geographic Base: The United States of America
Appearance: The Nagumwasuck are sad faced little people, 7" tall, and unspeakably ugly, with twisted visages. Very thin and conservative in dress (generally dressing in softened bark cloth), the Nagumwasuck have little hair, large pointed noses, and deep-set eyes.
Lifestyle: The Nagumwasuck are the guardian spirits of the Passamaquoddy Indians of the Northeast and used to live a lifestyle much like that tribe's traditional one. However with the entrance of European settlers, both the Passamaquoddy and the Nagumwasuck's fortunes have ebbed greatly. While their territory once spread from Nova Scotia through Maine, the Nagumwasuck now face extinction with only a 100 individuals remaining in a dismal state on the reservations of the Passamaquoddy. While the Nagumwasuck have always been a shy elusive people, terribly self-conscious of their ugliness (the one danger of these otherwise pacifist people is in laughing at them, which is almost always fatal), the effect of the annihilation of their culture has been to induce a mindset of almost constant despair and morbidness. While they once only sang dirges to mourn the passing of their tribesmen or the Passamaquoddy's, their depressing chants are almost constant these days. Today, only the obsession with their own extinction peaks their interest, with far reaching effects on their modes of cultural expression, mainly sculpture and dance. When the inevitable happens however, it is important that they be remembered for the friendly, peaceful, and humbly helpful people they once were.
Human Interaction: Even in their dying days, the Nagumwasuck stay very close to their dear friends the Passamaquoddy, living on their reservations and attempting to maintain the Nagumwasuck blessing of at least better fortune over the tribe. Mostly they enjoy engaging in nostalgia for the long ago old times with tribal elders. The power of the Nagumwasuck should not be underestimated however, despite the dismal results seen today, as before their world was turned upside-down, they were an invaluable aid to the Passamaquoddy, protecting them even from other tribes of humans by means of sneaky magical tricks and pacifying charms. |
